New Sealer System Protects Decorative Cement Tile
A new sealing process from V-SEAL for encaustic cement tile protects these beautiful unglazed tiles from stains and weather exposure.
The sealing system is applied as a combination of extremely thin coatings during the installation process, eliminating the need for a topical sealer later.
The V-SEAL system makes surfaces virtually impervious to stains from citrus products, beer, wine, soda, coffee and other commonly spilled ingredients.
To provide lasting protection from environmental elements and stains, V-SEAL Concrete Sealers, in partnership with Villa Lagoon Tile, have introduced a sealing process specifically engineered for encaustic cement tile, a distinctive hand-made decorative tile rapidly gaining popularity in the U.S. and worldwide for its unique artistry and customizable design.
"A major selling point of encaustic cement tile is the variety of vivid natural colors. Many sealers alter colors and appear plastic. The system we developed for the encaustic tile industry protects the natural colors and is nearly invisible, allowing the beauty of the tile to be displayed," says Bill York, V-SEAL senior technical advisor.
First produced in Europe in the mid-1800s, encaustic cement tiles are made from cement, marble dust, and mineral pigments, with the patterns inlayed by hand. The tiles are then pressed by hydraulic machines and cured naturally. Extremely durable, the tiles are an excellent choice for high-traffic commercial areas - both indoors and out. However, because the tiles are not fired, there is no glaze on the surface, which makes them highly absorbent and vulnerable to stains and weather exposure.
The V-SEAL Encaustic Tile Sealer System consists of a combination of extremely thin topical coatings applied during the installation process. Available for both commercial and residential applications, it makes surfaces virtually impervious to stains from citrus products, beer, wine, soda, coffee and other commonly spilled ingredients. The expected wear life varies with the level of care and foot traffic, but generally ranges from 7 to 10 years
"Our over 20 years experience as the leading supplier of professional-grade concrete countertop sealers led Villa Lagoon, a major producer of encaustic tile, to contact us. We took the time to study their process and develop a system that is both practical for installers and durable for the property owner," says York.
