Find Concrete Stains
Brickform Concrete Stains (www.brickform.com): John Schimmel of John's Cement in Milford, Mich., prefers Brickform's stains because of their color selection. Schimmel especially likes their coffee color, but more importantly he says, "The stains don't differentiate from the color chart. You can count on them." One of the unique ways that Schimmel uses Brickform stains is for coloring borders. "I usually recommend to homeowners to add a border around their concrete. It really sets it off." Read about this concrete patio Schimmel installed with colored concrete and Brickform stained borders.
 Smith Paint Products |
Smith Paints (http://smithpaints.com/): Smith Paints water-based stains are No. 1 on the list for Tony Victor of Stone Roots, Inc. in New Cumberland, PA. Here's why: "You can take an artist and they can paint a picture on the floor with this product. It's easy to use and environmentally friendly (water-based). If you drip, you wipe it off, unlike acid stain that will burn and not wipe away. You have total control with color, so you don't have to worry about spilling it or being around it."
 Kemiko Concrete Products |
Kemiko Stains (www.kemiko.com): Although Shane Ober, owner of Solid Rock Concrete in Gravette, AR enjoys putting down different stains, a lot of what he uses are Kemiko stain products. "It's easy to work with," he says. The color and consistency gives Shane just what he needs on his projects.
L.M. Scofield's Lithochrome Tintura Stain (www.scofield.com): Ben McCarthy of McCarthy Concrete in South Windsor, CT used this material for the flower he made at a park in his home town. "This is one of the best products I've ever worked with. It layers so well and you don't have to guess what the colors are going to look like on the floor. It's very predictable and easy to work with and you can create many different effects with it." Ben used this stain to on a brightly colored slab mural at the Artistry in Decorative Concrete demos at the 2007 World of Concrete.
On the Byrd project, CSolutions used three different colors of Scofield's Lithochrome Tintura water-based stains. "We work a lot with Scofield materials," said Tim Blankenship of CSolutions, Atlanta, GA, although he noted that "We have worked hard to be multifaceted so we can work with different manufacturers. We use whatever we need to. I try not to break specs unless I really feel it's necessary."
Flex-C-Ment overlay materials are ideal for vertical surfaces. |
Flex-C-Ment overlay stains (www.flex-c-ment.com): Wayne Sellon, Tajmawall, Temecula, CA, likes these stains because "they are the nicest colors, the most mellow, the most realistic." He notes, however, that he usually mixes a little pigment in to get the exact color he wants.
