  • This game room floor was given warmth with a richly stained concrete microtopping that blends beautifully with the other materials in the room, including the salvaged wood beams on the ceiling and the stone-faced walls.
  • Concrete and metal concrete tables artfully combine steel and concrete to create a sleek and modern look. The tables, which were made for a California winery, feature polished stainless steel legs and beige cast-concrete tops.
  • This Concrete and glass concrete bartop, with curves formed by custom-cut foam, looks like a large, L-shaped puzzle piece. A glass top permits full view of the base while contrasting beautifully with the concrete.

  • The second-level floor in this environmentally friendly home is cork with a round inlay of precast polished concrete strategically placed to echo a stained concrete floor visible on the level below. The wet bar, complete with a stainless steel undermount sink, is 3-inch-thick precast polished concrete, colored to match the medium-gray shade used for the kitchen countertops.
  • The new trend for outdoor patios, walkways and other pavements is to mix-and-match multiple materials, such as concrete, stone and interlocking pavers. For this stunning pool deck, concrete imprinted with an Italian slate pattern is interwoven with bands of bluestone.
  • Another popular look is to interplant a concrete driveway, patio or sidewalk with grass to create a natural-looking, verdant paving surface. The grass also serves as a decorative joint filler between slabs and helps to improve drainage. On this project, for a driveway located in Hawaii, the concrete was cast in the shape of lava rock. After all the slabs were poured, the gaps between them were filled with sand and planted with Bermuda grass seed.

Stamped Concrete

Watch an overview of the five critical factors affecting a successful stamped concrete job.

Some of the best design schemes result from mixing rather than matching materials. Done right, this approach creates a marvelous mélange of textures, colors, patterns, and styles (such as mixing the modern with the traditional). Decorative concrete is the perfect co-star for many materials. Rather than stealing the show, concrete enhances by bringing out the warmth in wood, adding textural contrast to smooth metals and glass, and counterbalancing the softness of upholstery fabrics and carpets. It’s also an ideal complement to natural stone because it shares a similar organic aesthetic. We sifted through the hundreds of pictures in The Concrete Network photo gallery and project archives to come up with some classic examples of these perfect pairings.
