“When a long-time client approached us to make this custom concrete ping pong table, we seized the opportunity,” says Jeff Kuryluk of Concrete Encounter. “Our tables are conversation pieces, and quickly become the focal point of any space.”

Pickleball might be all the rage right now, but another fun racket sport that continues to be a favorite pastime for people of all ages and fitness levels is ping pong. Although most standard ping pong tables are made of plywood, particleboard, or MDF, more people are taking this classic game to the next level by installing ping pong tables made of concrete.

“Our typical customer is someone who enjoys the game, but wants a high-end table that compliments their discerning taste. Our tables are conversation pieces, and quickly become the focal point of any space,” says Jeff Kuryluk of Concrete Encounter, a company that specializes in precast concrete countertops, fireplace surrounds, furniture, fire tables, game tables, and more.

How are concrete ping pong tables made?

Concrete ping pong tables are made similarly to large concrete kitchen islands and countertops. Because they are not supported by a subgrade, as are floors and other slabs, they are reinforced with steel reinforcing bars or wire mesh to limit cracking and ensure sufficient tensile strength and ductility. Some fabricators make concrete ping pong tables using glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) because it is significantly lighter in weight and higher in tensile strength than conventional concrete. In some designs, the legs of the table are also made of concrete to provide a seamless appearance. But the table can also be secured to a heavy-duty steel base.

“Our ping pong table is made from GFRC and regular castable concrete. The 1 1/4-inch-thick playing surface is GFRC while the legs are 5000-psi concrete with the same finish as the top. The weight of the concrete makes the table very sturdy, and everything is tied together with a painted metal frame for a movement-free table during play,” says Kuryluk.

How much does a concrete ping pong table weigh?

The overall weight can range anywhere from 1,000 to over 2,500 pounds depending on the table thickness and the materials used. Making the table using GFRC instead of standard concrete can reduce the weight by 50% or more.

What are the design options for concrete ping pong tables?

Many companies offer a variety of customization options for concrete ping pong tables so you can create a table that perfectly fits your space and style preferences. Options include:

  • Using different integral colors or concrete stains for the tabletop and legs.
  • Having custom logos or other custom graphics imprinted on the surface.
  • Using different net designs and materials.
  • Installing embedded fiber-optic lighting.
  • Casting the table in a nonstandard shape, such as a round table that allows for four-way play.
  • Different finish options for the table surface, including polished, matte, or lightly sandblasted.

Some concrete ping pong tables are also designed to combine functionality with recreation by doubling as dining or work tables. They allow for easy removal of a clamp-on net, so you can instantly convert the surface into a sleek, seamless tabletop.

What are the advantages of ping pong tables made of concrete?

In addition to their ability to be customized, concrete ping pong tables offer a number of other advantages, especially for outdoor use.

Durability.

They are incredibly strong and can withstand harsh weather conditions and heavy use. Even when the tables are left outside in the rain or snow, you don't have to worry about warping or bending, which can be a problem with wood tables.

Low maintenance.

Concrete ping pong tables are water-resistant and can easily be cleaned by wiping the surface with mild soap and water. They also are resistant to mold and mildew.

Sleek design.

Many people like concrete ping pong tables because they have a sleek, modern aesthetic. The mass and natural look of concrete instantly give any space an industrial vibe.

It's important to note that because concrete ping pong tables are very heavy, they usually require professional installation. This means that once installed, they are meant to stay in place, making them a long-term fixture.

How much do concrete ping pong tables cost?

A concrete ping pong table will typically be more expensive than one made of conventional materials, but the cost can vary depending on factors such as the quality of the concrete used and special design features. For a mid-range table that offers a good balance of style and functionality, you can expect to pay anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000. However, if you’re after a high-end handcrafted table that incorporates special design elements, the price can run as high as $10,000 or more.

Do concrete ping pong tables meet ITTF regulations?

Ping pong tables designed for tournament play must meet standards established by the International Table Tennis Federation in terms of dimensions, line markings, playing surface, and ball bounce. Although most concrete ping pong tables are not made for tournament play, they can still adhere pretty closely to ITTF regulations.

“Our tables exhibit excellent playability characteristics,” says Kuryluk. “Ball bounce is good and the coefficient of friction seems okay (although we’ve never tested it). Lines are applied according to regulations, but we can also customize them to the client's liking, leaving off the perimeter lines, for instance, and using different colors for both the table and the lines to match their decor.”
